Thurmond Family Reveals Yet Another Skeleton in Their Woodshed

NEW YORK – When the Reverend Al Sharpton decided to look into his genealogy, he had no idea that he would find out he is a descendant of a slave owned by the late Senator Strom Thurmond (Dixiecrat)’s great-great grandfather. In fact, Sharpton described the revelation as “shocking.”

It was probably the most shocking thing in my life,” Sharpton said. “This is right up there with watching myself on tape talking to that undercover FBI agent about laundering money and buying cocaine, which I did not do.”

Thurmond’s relatives were also surprised to learn the news. Doris Strom Costner, Strom’s cousin said she “never heard of such a thing.” “My momma never would talk to me about nothing like that,” Costner claimed. “She only talked to me about good things.”

What’s not good about slavery if you’re the slave owner? No, really. Obviously, if you are a slave, then slavery has it’s downsides, but if there were a period in your life in which you had a slave(s) to do the things you didn’t want to do in your everyday life, wouldn’t you look back on that period fondly and with some nostalgia? If when you went to renew your driver’s license there was a place on the form that read Would you like to receive a free slave with your renewal, today? Please check one: Yes or No everyone would check Yes even if they new they would get a bunch of junk mail and credit card offers.

Secondly, why is everyone surprised that an African American had an ancestor who was the slave of the ancestor of a rich white politician in South Carolina? We’re not talking about Tiger Woods or Barak Obama here. Even Michael Jackson probably had an ancestor who was a slave to Thurmond’s family. Genealogists found that Sharpton’s great-grandfather, Coleman Sharpton, was a slave owned by Julia Thurmond, whose grandfather was Strom Thurmond’s great-great-grandfather. They also found out from DNA evidence exhumed from the tomb of Julia Thurmond there’s a 99.7% chance that Julia Thurmond was white.

The DCN attempted to reach Senator Thurmond for comment, but he did not return our phone calls – probably because he’s dead.
